(sent July 9, 2008)

Pathfinder is now available for beta testing.

Thunderhead Engineering is pleased to announce the availability of our new evacuation modeling software for open beta testing.  Pathfinder is an agent based egress and human movement simulator. It provides a graphical user interface for simulation design and execution as well as a 3D visualization tool for results analysis.

Individuals interested in beta testing the software can download the current version from the Pathfinder web page at:

http://www.thunderheadeng.com/pathfinder

Documentation and videos are also available on the Pathfinder page.

If you choose to participate in the beta testing process, we ask that you share your experience with us and other users on the Pathfinder forum at:

http://www.thunderheadeng.net/forum/index.php/board,2.0.html

Thank you,
The Pathfinder Team

(Sent September 9, 2008)

A new release of Pathfinder (Beta) is now available for testing at:

http://www.thunderheadeng.net/download/pathfinder_20080909.exe

This updated version includes the following changes:

    * Fixed a non-determinism bug in the simulator.  The results were sensitive to the order in which boundary edges were being processed.
    * Fixed a bug that caused the main user interface to change the order of the adjacency calculation each time a PTH file was loaded.  This was causing small changes in the simulation results times.
    * Added -Dsun.java2d.noddraw when running the program to prevent flicker on some graphics cards
    * Fixed a bug that caused adjacent exit edges to be merged too aggressively.  In some situations, this caused occupants to attempt (unsuccessfully) to walk through a wall separating two exits.
    * Fixed a bug in trimming internal edges that was leading to occupants sometimes becoming stuck.
    * In the main user interface, changed the random seed to apply specifically to agent properties (preventing undesired random "steps" from being introduced).
    * In the main user interface, double-clicking a profile in the tree will now open the Edit Profiles dialog
    * Fixed a bug in the Add Agent tools that would cause new agents to sometimes be linked to profiles that no longer existed.
    * In reactive steering mode, added a time delay for the steering force re-calculation.  This made reactive steering simulations considerably faster (4x faster in some cases).
    * Improved the Background Image dialog and reduced the memory footprint of background images

We are planning a new release in about a month that should add some new visualization features (density shown on the floor, etc) and some new features in the main user interface.  The big goal of this release was to make it possible to reproduce any problems found by our testers.  That should make it a lot easier to chase down any bugs our beta testers identify.

Thank you very much to all of the beta testers that have been giving us such great feedback on the forum and via email.

You may have noticed that the Pathfinder beta testing license expires December 31, 2008. We've posted a new license file that you can use to continue testing Pathfinder. Here's how to download and install the new license:

   1. Download the new license file (pathfinder_beta.lic) from the following URL:
      http://www.thunderheadeng.com/pathfinder/pathfinder_beta.lic
   2. Copy this file to your Pathfinder license directory:
on Windows XP: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataPathfinderlicense
      on Windows Vista: C:ProgramDataPathfinderlicense
   3. Start Pathfinder. Your new license will be detected automatically.

Here's a preview of some of the new features we're finishing up for the next beta release of Pathfinder:

    * Graphical geometry editing as well as move, copy, rotate, and mirror tools.
    * Reactive steering will be the default simulator mode. We've made a lot of improvements to reactive steering mode and now people respond better in queues and tight spaces. Occupants will not become stuck on geometric edges as often (hopefully never).
    * Ability to import PyroSim files. We've made the necessary improvements to the import system so that it can handle PSM files. Holes will be removed from PyroSim geometry so doors and windows will work correctly. The automatic floor detection tool will be able to handle the angled features in PSM and DXF files.
    * Many bug fixes and other features (occupants will show as cylinders in the editor, online license activation, documentation for steering behaviors, etc).

Please let us know what you think about Pathfinder in our online forum at:

Happy Holidays,

Pathfinder 2009.1 RC1

A new version of Pathfinder is now available for beta testing.  We're considering the new version a release candidate.  It should be a good representation of the commercial release.  You can download the updated version from the Pathfinder web page:

http://www.thunderheadeng.com/pathfinder/index.html

To activate the Pathfinder license, please use the following online activation key:

4970 A3E4 1341 5540 6473 87

This version of Pathfinder will also function using the previously issued beta testing license.

We've made a lot of changes.  We've also added a Known Issues and Limitations section to the release notes and users manual.  You can find the Pathfinder release notes at:

http://www.thunderheadeng.com/pathfinder/relnotes.html

After you've had a look at Pathfinder, please fill out a Pathfinder survey at:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=RSino7XHttLd3uOn0MvIXQ_3d_3d

We are planning for the commercial release to happen some time in April.

Please let us know if you find any problems or have any questions.

Pathfinder 2009.1 RC2

A new release of Pathfinder is available.  This update fixes a bug that corrupts existing PyroSim installations and will prevent future Pathfinder installations from uninstalling Pathfinder 2009.1 RC1.  More details are in the release notes, copied below:

This release fixes an installer bug in Pathfinder 2009.1 RC1. The installer shared an MSI "Upgrade Code" with PyroSim. As a result, the Pathfinder 2009.1 RC1 install will corrupt any existing PyroSim 2008 installs. Also, attempting to re-install PyroSim 2008 will fail until Pathfinder 2009 is removed.

We have fixed the Pathfinder upgrade code and future installs of Pathfinder will not interfere with PyroSim. If your PyroSim installation has been damaged by Pathfinder 2009 RC1, you can restore both PyroSim and Pathfinder to working condition by following these steps:

   1. Uninstall Pathfinder 2009.1 RC1
   2. Install the latest version of PyroSim. For a link to the PyroSim download page, please email support@thunderheadeng.com
   3. Install Pathfinder 2009.1 RC2

Removing PyroSim or Pathfinder will not remove existing software license files. Previous versions of Pathfinder are not affected by this bug.  Future versions of Pathfinder will not be able to uninstall Pathfinder 2009.1 RC1.  The old version should be uninstalled prior to installing the new version.

Release notes and the updated installer are available on the Pathfinder web page:

http://www.thunderheadeng.com/pathfinder/index.html

Please let us know if you have any questions.
