Burn Away - Question
« on: December 10, 2013, 02:25:30 am »

I would like to compare Pyrosim to previous results I have attained with regards to total HR, peak HRR and smoke released of specific materials.

For instance, if I have 1 kg of birch wood (this is just an example, any solid material would be acceptable), that I wanted to burn away and compare what Pyrosim thinks would happen to what I've previously seen, what would be the best way to go about doing this?

I have a few thoughts on how this might be accomplished but if anyone has already performed this sort of test, I would appreciate the help.

Thank you,
Jim

Hello Jim,

Please take a look at the FDS Tech. Ref. Vol. 2 Verification Guide, section 7.1.3 "Burning Rate of a Small Object (cell_burn_away)".
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5P7YZgN_DfeQ3RsOXdPUnY0Y0k/edit

The input file for it is here:
https://code.google.com/p/fds-smv/source/browse/trunk/FDS/trunk/Verification/Pyrolysis/cell_burn_away.fds

Next, please see the cases in this directory:
https://code.google.com/p/fds-smv/source/browse/trunk/FDS/trunk/Verification/Fires/

Especially the 'box_burn_away' and 'couch' files.

What kind of data for 'previous results' do you have to compare to?

Thank you Bryan, I appreciate it.

I have experimental data as well as self-calculated results (very rough ones I might add) with regards to total HR, HRR, smoke release rate and total smoke volume of materials including various types of wood, plastics and felt materials (such as cotton).

Regards,
Jim

If You want compare real test obtained from calorimeter with FDS results You especially need:

-heat of combustion
-reference temperature
-pyrolize range
-heating rate
-heat of reaction
-soot yeld

Some of them You can find for example in: "Handbook of Building Materials for Fire Protection" , others You can measure with calorimeter.
