Shoulder width and default profiles
« on: August 02, 2012, 06:21:01 am »

I can't seem to find this in any of the documentation: The default shoulder width is 45,58 cm, but where does this number come from? Why 45,58?

I would be very grateful for an explanation as to how this value was determined.

Also, a suggestion/wish for future updates: A number of pre-determined profiles would be really nice. Such as kids, men, women, elderly, and so on.

Thank you for your answers.

I don't remember what data we used to select that default. I have in my head that we chose 18 inches (45.72 cm) and I don't know what happened to the lost 14 mm either.

A quick Google search turned up this ergonomics chart: http://www.jneuhaus.com/human.html which supports the 18 inches number, but I don't think that is what we used. I have a vague recollection of a range of human figures shown from above and super-imposed on a grid.

Do you know of a biometric data source that you could recommend? If there is compelling data to support a different default value, we can look at improving the software.
