PyroSim / Re: Curved tunnel
« on: October 02, 2018, 05:23:53 pm »
Hi faker,

I looked into a similar problem with sloping ceilings during my thesis ~5 years ago. Have a look at the PDF in the below link, specifically section 3, where I attempted to compare the various ways (available at that time) of modelling sloping or curved obstructions, and the impact on smoke. Whilst this specifically addressed sprinkler activation, you should be able to adapt some of the methodologies to your case to determine what will work best for you.

Note that what was previously referred to as FREE_SLIP, was renamed a few years ago and is what you are referring to with "smooth" if I am not mistaken. I recommend that you read the user's guide for more info on this parameter, and I am not convinced that it is appropriate to use in most standard fire engineering cases.

PyroSim / Re: PyroSim Results - Clipping

Chad, looks like the latest PyroSim version has implemented this feature:

"Views, tours, and section boxes can now be created directly within Results. This data can also be exchanged between results using an import feature."

I can't find this function in the results viewer. Would be a great addition in order to present X and Y slice results.

PyroSim / Feature Request - Split Screen
« on: April 17, 2018, 07:20:56 pm »
Hey team Thunderhead Engineering,

Would it be possible to implement a split screen feature, similar to when in MS Word you can have two windows or a split window, showing different parts? I almost always edit my models in PyroSim using the 2D View, but constantly flick over to 3D view to ensure that my changes are correct - especially for large complicated models where the base geometry has been imported from a DWG.  It may be too computationally demanding for most machines, but it would be a great feature if possible.

PyroSim / Results Viewer - Setting Defaults
« on: April 03, 2018, 11:38:20 pm »

Is there a way to set default preferences in the FDS results viewer? For example, 99% of the time I change my visibility slice bounds to be 0 m 10 10 m (custom) and with colours inverted. Is there any way of setting this as a default value on each startup?

Guys... this new PyroSim release is almost too exciting for words! I'm totally nerding out about the new PyroSim Results viewer. Thanks a bunch for creating this!!

Great, thanks!

Also a heads up - the download page still states that the new PyroSim version (2017.2.1115) comes with FDS 6.5.3.

The primary use of wind is when doing smoke control assessments per the International Building Code - requiring wind effects to be accounted for. What I tried to use the new &WIND parameter for was to simply simulate the worst case external wind conditions for a specific site. The latest FDS release comes with an example case where the wind changes direction - this is not something I believe I would be interested in, as I would typically simply guess and specify the worst case wind direction and speed to see how that affects tenability.

I would prioritise record view performance before new features from FDS - as all new features can be implemented manually through the additional records view.

PyroSim / Preview in smokeview with negative start time
« on: November 09, 2017, 04:55:03 pm »

I just tried to preview in smokeview one of my Pyrosim models, where I specified a negative start time (-15 s in this case). PyroSim then attempts to run the model for 15 seconds in FDS instead of opening the smokeview file, as it normally does when start time is 0 s.  The simple workaround is obviously to change the start time to 0 s if I want to preview models, but it would be nice to not have to think about this.

Also a request - when working with large files, "Record View" can be really slow. It would be great to have an independent "Additional Records" tab to be able to switch between 3D/2D view and Additional Records quicker.

PyroSim / FDS 6.6.0 features into PyroSim
« on: November 09, 2017, 02:15:10 pm »
Hi Thunderhead team,

Is there an ETA on when some of the latest FDS 6.6.0 features will be implemented in PyroSim?  I'm primarily interested in the new atmospheric effects in order to use the &WIND group.

I know I can implement this using the additional records - which is what I will do until this is implemented.

From memory, the ASHRAE calcs are only rough, provide a minimum value (not maximum), and do not specify where or how your extract is achieved.  You may have to experiment with spreading your extract points in multiple locations to ensure there is no plug-holing, or you may need to increase make up air or similar.  Do you have extract points on the non-fire side of the "smoke barrier"?

There are a number of issues that could be causing the smoke to spread, without seeing the model and detailed inputs it's difficult to help unfortunately.

PyroSim / Re: Parts of Slice Files missing
« on: August 03, 2017, 12:27:00 pm »
I've had this exact problem before. I believe Charlie is right that the problem is running out of memory.  I've used the same workaround as kcn283 - first selecting multi-slice and then going in and manually adding the missing slices.

PyroSim / Re: Drawing Walls - Suggestion
« on: June 09, 2017, 12:57:34 pm »
Nevermind I realized that this is already possible using "Draw a Slab Obstruction".... I was too focused on thinking a slab is in the Z-plane to realize it is in whatever plane you have your 2D view set to.

PyroSim / Drawing Walls - Suggestion
« on: June 09, 2017, 12:53:49 pm »
Hi Thunderhead team,

When using the "Draw a Slab Obstruction" tool, it is possible to define multiple points (polygon - i.e. not only a rectangular slab outline).  Could this be implemented for walls as well? It would be handy when looking in 2D view from one of the four sides to be able to (1) draw a wall, and (2) draw a wall with multiple points.

The latest version of FDS is now 6.5.2, with version 6.5.3 supposedly coming out in a few days.
